Dear Local Council 78 members,

In an effort to better organize our local council and further improve representation for our flight attendants, we are in the process of reviewing all current committee rosters. 

It is necessary to evaluate the size and structure of each committee.  We would like to begin this process as soon as possible in order to make proper alignments and provide necessary training where applicable.  Many of you have expressed interest in joining committees and NOW is the time for you to step up to the plate!
The following are brief descriptions of available AFA local 78 committees.  If you wish to serve on any of these committees please direct your interest in writing preferable by email to jason4afa@yahoo.com or via AFA drop box located in FLL crew room by February 10, 2010.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP/PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS COMMITTEE-

  • Provides information and assistance to flight attendants needing support on personal issues.
  • Receives and acts upon information regarding the professional conduct of flight attendants. 
  • The EAP is a support service provided by flight attendants for flight attendants, their families and partners. 
  • EAP peer Reps. are trained to provide distinct interrelated services to include: assessment, support, referral service, professional standards and critical incident response.

GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE-

  • Represents flight attendants in discipline and contract disputes. 
  • Protect all flight attendants against arbitrary and unjust disciplinary action and the upholding of the CBA. 
  • Handle initial grievance hearing and assist Union attorneys in preparations of grievances for System board.

HOTEL / UNIFORM COMMITTEE-

  • Works with company personnel in establishing adequate hotels for layovers and ensure flight attendants safety in the work place.
  • Meet with company on a semi-annual basis.

INFO REPS-

  • A resource for the membership providing effective communication between the LEC and the membership. 
  • Distribution is accomplished while working flights, in crew rooms and on layovers.
  • This position requires little time and is very effective in communicating information on a personal level.

LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE-

  • Work on the state level to establish working relationship with senators and representatives to further the legislative interest of the flight attendants. 
  • Raise awareness to flight attendants on the importance of legislative action and developments.

SAFETY AND HEALTH COMMITTEE-

  • Coordinate write-ups on safety issues.  Work with company representatives to ensure flight attendants safety in the work place.
  • Act in an advisory role to LEC on safety matters.

SCHEDULING COMMITTEE-

  • Knowledge of CBA, FARs, flight duty-time and crew rest guidelines. 
  • Be familiar with provisions of the contract dealing with legalities and scheduling.

WORKERS COMPENSATION/BENEFITS COMMITTEE-

  • Maintains and provide information to flight attendants regarding worker compensation and benefits. 
  • This committee will also include FMLA requirements etc.
